New for the Fall quarter 2010 I will offer a new RFUMS/CMS Sophomore Elective,
titled "Molecular Pathology of Cancer Diagnosis and Therapy", MPAT 632 to be held in the Pathology Conference Room.
It is offered immediately following the weeks on my lectures on Basic Neoplasia of the
Sophomore Pathology course, 9/21/2010.
This 10-week course is open for students who are concurrently enrolled in the Pathology course, or have passed the course.
In general the course consists of a thorough analysis of common signaling pathways, cytogenetic analyses,
and other molecular diagnostic markers currently used in the clinic
1) for cancer diagnosis,
2) for cancer prognosis,
3) for anti-cancer therapy,
4) to monitor therapeutic outcome of cancer, and
5) to prevent cancers.
In addition, basic molecular pathways with relevance to basic cancer biology and candidate clinical relevance will be discussed.
The subjects covered are elaborations of topics studied during the Sophomore pathology course.
The terminal objectives of the elective are:
1) To have a superior understanding of the basic molecular pathways involved in cancer formation and progression to enhance performance on the The Boards.
2) To understand how such pathways are currently used in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of cancer as a medical student will be exposed to in practice during rotations and residency.
3) To have an idea of what future developments for the molecular pathology of cancer might be within the next 5-10 years.
In this course, I will present 5 lectures on the basic molecular processes leading to common cancers, how such changes are used in diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.
In addition, each student will present a paper with clinical relevance and which I will chose in the style of journal-club.
